2022 XC Camp

The camp went really well. I think the kids got a good experience and also had a lot of fun together with their down time. During their free time they organized a euchre tournament and spikeball tournament.

Runs covered in the camp:

Day 1: Shake out 2 in the morning and an afternoon run of 6 miles out to camp from the Nature Center. At camp we had a visit from Dylan Swartzel, PHD in physical therapy, who talked about the importance of core and how it contributes to injury prevention. He ran through some different things to show them were they may have room for improvement.

Day 2: Morning shake out around Trail 8 and then the Three Dune Challenge loop at Chesterton Dunes. This is a 1.5 mile loop covering three dune peaks in the Chesterton Dunes State Park. We added in a bonus dune that goes down to the beach and back over about 200 yards. There was an optional second loop over the course w/o the bounce, that we had a few takers complete! They then had a good time enjoying the beach for a few hours.

Day 3: Morning shake out and off to the fire tower. We had a talk about doing challenging things and becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable. They accomplished this during their stay! The firetower workout was what is called a Wildman relay. The kids were strategically paired up to balance the teams. Each team of two, runs out to 1 of 4 check points, from the center meeting area, where they will lay down their team markers. They then return to center to tag each other to then retrieve the markers they left out at the check points. They go out and back until each have covered all checkpoints. The firetower sits on top of a hill, as you may remember. All trails leading up are routes to checkpoints with one of the check points being on top of the firetower! The kids had fun with this one. We concluded our workouts with what we told the kids would be the “shortest run of camp”. It was technically. We went to bass lake in a very shallow section of the lake in about waist deep water and did a 1 mile aqua jog.

Thank you again for your support of the team and we’ll keep you posted on what happens next!

Here is the schedule we followed for the three days.
